A business owner once asked me: “Everyone says I need SEO. Nobody explains what it actually is. Can you explain it like I’m ten?”
Challenge accepted.
Google is a giant librarian
Imagine a library with a billion books and one librarian everyone asks. Someone asks: “What’s the best book on garden design?” The librarian has to pick 10 books out of a million gardening titles and stack them in order.
How does he choose? He checks three things:
- Is the book readable and intact? Solid binding, no torn pages, clear print
- Does the content actually answer the question? A book titled “Garden Design” that only covers artificial turf won’t be offered
- Do people recommend it? If ten gardening experts cite this book, it is probably good
Google is the librarian. Your website is the book. SEO is everything you do so the librarian picks yours.
The three legs of SEO
The library metaphor maps to three real-world areas:
1. Technical SEO: the readable book
The site must be fast, work flawlessly on mobile, and be built so Google can “read” it. A slow site, or one broken on phones, loses before the content is even judged. This part depends on whoever builds your site - choose well.
2. Content: the book that answers the question
The most important rule in SEO: Google wants to serve the best answer to the searcher’s question. A cosmetician in Raanana who wrote a clear page about “facial treatments in Raanana” and a detailed article on “choosing a facial for sensitive skin” gives Google exactly what it needs. A site that only says “Welcome! We are professional and reliable” gives Google nothing to work with.
3. Authority: the recommendations
When other sites link to you or mention you, Google concludes you are a serious player. Good Google reviews, a mention on a professional association site, a local news feature - all of it builds authority.
What you can do alone, this month
Without paying anyone a shekel:
- Complete your Google Business Profile end to end: photos, hours, services
- Ask every happy customer for a review. Ten good reviews beat a lot of magic tricks
- Write a page for each core service, in the language your customers use - not your professional jargon
- Test your site speed at pagespeed.web.dev. Under 70 on mobile? There is work to do
Bottom line
SEO is not magic and not a scam - it is simply convincing the world’s biggest librarian that your book is the best answer. Three legs: a sound and fast site, content that answers real questions, and recommendations that build trust. You can start alone today, and the results compound into an asset that works for you for years.
